I have been teaching Italian for about 9 years and many of my students have asked me if cappuccino can only be drunk in the morning. Today we're going to dispel the myth that you can drink cappuccino until midday, because you can drink cappuccino whenever you want! Okay, okay, it is true that we usually have it at breakfast or in the first part of the day, but there is no rule that prevents us from having it in the afternoon or even in the evening.
If you are in Italy and you feel like having a cappuccino, you can go into a bar and order it without any problem. Some people drink cappuccino while eating pizza or just having lunch, well, that hurts my heart because in my opinion it's a combination that doesn't work 😀 Try to drink cappuccino alone, or maybe with a dessert, so you can enjoy its flavour to the full.
“Buongiorno/Buonasera, un caffè, per favore" 🙂
Another important thing is where to get it; the choice of café is crucial. I suggest you read reviews of cafes in your area, because sometimes the lesser known places are the best! The same goes for a good coffee, it is important to choose the place because not all coffee shops are the same.
While we're on the subject of coffee and cappuccino, let's talk about coffee at the table and at the bar or counter. Is there a difference? It depends on the café, but especially in tourist areas the price can vary, at the counter it costs one and at the table another. Once I was in Rome with my girlfriend and we ordered a coffee and a cappuccino at the table and paid almost ten euros. I was shocked because a coffee usually costs a euro twenty or thirty and a cappuccino maybe two euros!
A lot of tourists drink American coffee. Do you know why it is called that? During the Second World War, American soldiers in Italy ordered coffee, but it was too strong for them, so they added water to it; that's how it came to be called Caffè Americano 🙂 Before ending, let's have a look at the different types of coffee you can order in a café:
Coffee or Espresso. We just call it caffè
Ristretto
Lungo
Macchiato
Americano
Mocaccino
Affogato
The list goes on with many other variations, but these are the most common. Some people drink coffee "al vetro" - instead of a ceramic cup, they take their coffee in a small glass. There is little or no difference, depending on the customer's preference. However, it is also true that the ceramic can become porous, giving the coffee a slightly different flavour.
Now I will leave you to your coffee and see you soon ;)
